Alexander C. Bennett has two PHDs in Human Studies and Sciences from the University of Canterbury and Kyoto University. He holds the ranks of 7th dan Kyoshi in Kendo, 5th dan in Iaido and Naginata, 3rd Dan in Jukendo and Tankendo. In this episode, we’re starting the second part of the series by talking about the origins of Japanese Budo: First topic is the creation of the Kodokan Judo by Jigoro Kano.
An excellent introduction to Judo as the gateway between old and new and as the first gendai martial art. Alex Bennett's presentation is engaging and well-grounded, as usual.

The Canon of Judo is a book that was originally published in 1956, and written by Kodokan 10th dan, Kyuzo Mifune (1883-1965). The book covers almost all of the Kodokan recognized techniques, adds variations and new techniques, including Do-Jime in passing as well. The book also describes fifteen Kata developed by Mifune to teach adaptation through reversal and counters. The book organizes the techniques differently from the official Kodokan Gokyo.
A classic reference by Mifune himself, contains techniques not often found elsewhere. Also contains a number of kata outside the official canon, some of them practiced worldwide.
This channel discusses martial arts topics, history, and the forgotten legends of these beautiful arts.
A frequently updated channel with commented versions of old (and often forgotten) footage, with a heavy bias towards history of Judo from a "traditional" viewpoint, but also including other martial arts. A polarising channel, but certainly one of the most popular ones.
As Gracey Jujutsu had Mitsuyo Maeda as an inspiration, Haku Michigami was behind the globalization of judo. In the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Anton Geesink triggered the turning point of the globalization of judo when he won the open weight class finals. The man who trained him was "Haku Michigami". Haku Michigami's dramatic story filled with events is presented.
Very interesting page, with many different stories of Haku Michigami. Epecially interesting are the accounts about the differences between pre-war and post-war Judo, the Butokukai (through its students) and the Kodokan, and the conflict between different conceptions of what Judo should be. Also, his account of training Geesink almost as a way to fight the Kodokan by proxy is very engaging.
Complete Kodokan grappling techniques with variations covering holding, choking and arm locks.
Full video of the Kodokan comprehensive newaza production, from Hal Sharp's channel. Includes competition examples as well as the canonical form, this is an excellent reference for anyone, and especially for those studying for the Katame no Kata.

The largest German-speaking forum, and perhaps the most active in Europe; lots of information about the history of Judo in Germany, Europe, and the world, plus discussions on techniques, history of Judo, news, etc. Worth visiting even for those that do not speak German, especially considering the access to automatic translation tools and the wealth of information.
Judo network and forum
One of the successor forums to the late judoforum.com, created after the decable, and the most direct descendent as far as I can tell; activity peaked after the event, and currently it seems to suffer from the same general decline in forum usage. Still, lots of threads with that "classical" feeling of when long-term discussions were possible (a format lost on the "modern" alternatives"), and an overall civilised commmunity.

A film by Julien Boucher (Ronin Martial Production, 2019)
The history of Kawaishi-sensei, and as such also largely the history of French Judo itself, in a documentary filled with interesting archival footage and a comprehensive view of his life. From being the undisputed pioneer and leader of French Judo to the conflict with the Kodokan, echoing similar tensions elsewhere fueled by the differing views on what Judo was or should be - the removal of techniques being one of those aspects, given Kawaishi's personal method of teaching.

The EJU President Sergey Soloveychik says: "The idea to create the film Judo. The Art of Living was developed by the European Judo Union. The film is aimed specifically at parents of young children and teenagers. At the heart of the film’s message are real stories of the people who have been able to call on their judo skills in difficult moments of their lives in order to survive or find themselves. Nowadays sport plays an important role in how authorities and society educates an active young generation. Judo can also help parents to educate strong, healthy and respectful children."

The film shows the intensive judo training Rogers took at a Tokyo college, as well as glimpses of his life in Japan.
A classic, a personal account of training in Japan in the 60s. Doug trains, amongst others, with Kimura. Engaging storyline about the life of someone who left everything known to live in Japan.

1929 - Koshiki-No-Kata, Jigoro Kano and Yoshiaki Yamashita
Kano Jigoro and Yoshiaki Yamashita performing Koshiki-no-kata
Also known as the Kito-ryu no kata, this is not only an interesting historical document of the founder of Judo but also ties with the theme of Judo as a vehicle for preservation of koryu jujutsu, specifically in this case Kito-ryu (from which Judo can be said to be a descendent).
Kitō-ryū jūjutsu and the desolation of Kōdōkan jūdō’s Koshiki-no-kata ― Remembering Inoue Shōji (1927-2018)
Inoue Shōji (1927-2018) was born in Tokushima prefecture, Japan. As a youngster he took up jūdō. Later, he studied Kitō-ryū jūjutsu for some time with Odaka Shigeru. During his professional career as a prison guard he followed up on an offer to become a jūdō therapist. In a dōjō in the Yamashina-ku ward in Kyōto he taught both jūdō and a limited catalogue of Kitō-ryū that included exercises that were adopted into Kōdōkan jūdō under the name koshiki-no-kata [The Antique Forms]. With Kōdōkan jūdō continuing to deteriorate into an ordinary sport and losing its core values and purpose, Inoue increasingly appreciated the traditional martial arts values preserved in Kitō-ryū jūjutsu. His enthusiasm was reflected in beginning to give public demonstrations at various events in Japan and becoming a representative of Kitō-ryū in the Nihon Kobudō Kyōkai (...)
An important paper on Koshiki-no-kata, Kito-ryu, and their relation with Kodokan Judo, as well as how Judo itself has changed. By Carl De Crée, one of the most prolific Judo researchers, whose work is marked by academic and scientific riguer.

The history of Judo in Portugal (Portuguese Judo Federation, 1959-2009).
This documentary is split in 4 relatively small parts (5-10m each), totalling around 30m. It actually starts a bit before the mentioned date (specifically in 1947 with the Budo Academy), but quickly proceeds to the arrival of Kobayashi Kiyoshi (1925-2013, Kodokan 9th dan), a student of Mifune that due to his role is called "the father of Portuguese Judo", the creation of the Federation, and the sporting sucesses in the 80s and beyond.

Judo - The universal principle of adaptability r/judo is a reddit for judoka and spectators to submit anything about Judo.
To my knowledge, /r/judo is currently the most active Judo-related forum-like community in the English language. It brings with it all the advantages and disavantages of Reddit, from the wide reach and active moderation, to a bias towards the immediate that hinders attempts at long-term discussions. The wiki is very useful, itself a curated list of resources about techniques, history, FAQs, and more. Almost impossible to avoid.
My name is Sampson Sampson. I'm an 9th dan judo coach with over 49 years experience and I've created this channel to be an online judo resource that I hope will help you to take your judo, BJJ or grappling to the next level. I regularly release both traditional and nogi judo videos that show you how to do judo throws, how to do judo hold downs, some tutorials for judo newcomers (such as how to do judo breakfalls) as well as well as some vlogs where I discuss some of my thoughts about the current state of modern judo. During my career I have fought extensively across multiple federations within Great Britain and internationally as part of the Cypriot National Judo team - which I later helped coach for events such as the European Championships and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. I hope that through this channel I can pass on my experiences to you and help you to become a better judoka one video at a time.
The channel of Sampson Sampson, currently head coach of Sobell Judo Club in London, and president of Judo For All UK, having separated from the BJC at the time of the leg-grab ban. A vocal defender of "Traditional Kodokan Judo", the channel contains not only technique videos for the more obvious waza, but a wider range that includes leg grabs, picks, counters, and no-gi judo. The channel also contains a podcast where Sampson talks about his own path and other topics.
Samurai Spirit was a TV documentary on NHK World from 2008 to 2009, focusing on the traditional martial arts of Japan. It was hosted by Nicholas Pettas, a Kyokushin Karate practioner and former K-1 Grand Prix champion.
This is the Judo episode. Focus on the "ippon" as a (quasi-philosofical) goal, visits Nippon Sport Science University, several well-known Japanese judoka are interviewed (like Kosei Inoe), and the mechanical principles of Judo demonstrated.
Kurosawa’s effortless debut is based on a novel by Tsuneo Tomita about the rivalry between judo and jujitsu. Starring Susumu Fujita as the title character, Sanshiro Sugata is a thrilling martial arts action tale, but it’s also a moving story of moral education that’s quintessential Kurosawa.
A 1943 Japanese action drama film and the directorial debut of celebrated Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa. Sanshiro Sugata is based on the novel of the same name by Tsuneo Tomita, which was in turn inspired by the life of Shiro Saigo.
Kurosawa’s first film was such a success that the studio leaned on the director to make a sequel. The result is a hugely entertaining adventure, reuniting most of the major players from the original and featuring a two-part narrative in which Sanshiro first fights a pair of Americans and then finds himself the target of a revenge mission undertaken by the brothers of the original film’s villain.
Released closer to the end of the war, this sequel parallels the way Judo (and everything else) was being mobiled in the spirit of total war: through it's protagonists, Judo faces western boxing, Japan faces the USA. The outcome is what would be expected, in a film that manages to retain Kurosawa's touch.

The Kanō Chronicles: The Untold History of Modern Japan® (嘉納歴代 史:知らず近代日本史®) is the result of over 15 years of research into the life and times of Kanō Jigorō, 嘉納治五郎 (1860-1938), the founder of jûdô 柔道. In traditional jūdō texts and by today’s jūdōka 柔道家 (judo practitioners) he is normally addressed as ‘Kano shihan’ 師範 (Master Kano). No English or Japanese language biographies of Kano shihan capture the complexity of the man and his times. Even the best Japanese biographies are often narrow, typically focused on Kano’s jūdō, education, sports, or Olympic activities, or some combination thereof. There are exceptions, but they are rare and difficult to digest, even for native Japanese, and have escaped the attention of Western researchers.
Written by Lance Gatling, this is a fundamental resource for anyone seriously looking for a better understanding of the history of Judo and Kano Jigoro himself. Highly recommended.

Hal's study of judo in Japan.
A great inside view of Judo history by Hal Sharp, Judo pioneer.
Judo is an Olympic sport that has become popular around the world. The story of the birth and development of Judo is told from the perspective of those close to Kano Jigoro, the founder of Kodokan Judo, in Japan. The life of Kano Jigoro has been animated ahead of the Paris Olympics to be held in the summer of 2024 in France, Europe's leading judo powerhouse.
Japanese animation of the life of Kano Jigoro. Tells a pretty standard "approved" Kodokan version of the events, which is unsurprising since it's supervised by the Kodokan. The 5 episodes pick different themes: Kano through the words of Katsu Kaishū, 6 statues of Kano worldwide, the truth about Sanshiro (the "fights against jujutsu" that would end up in Sanshiro Sugata, here showing Tsunejiro Tomita as Kodokan's champion), the initial expansion as "jujutsu", and the spreading out to the world.
Throw Down (directed by Johnny To)
Throw Down (traditional Chinese: 柔道龍虎榜; simplified Chinese: 柔 道龙虎榜) (Judo Dragon and the Tiger List) is a 2004 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Johnnie To and starring Louis Koo, Aaron Kwok, Cherrie Ying, and Tony Leung Ka-fai. To dedicated the film to the late Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and, in making it, had drawn upon elements of Kurosawa's debut feature, Sanshiro Sugata. Throw Down had its premiere at the 61st Venice International Film Festival.
Description says most of it. A singular movie in the way that fight scenes are choreographed with and around Judo, not something very common. The link to Sanshiro Sugata is clear, but the pace and visuals have Johnnie To's signature.
Tokai University Judo students demonstrating Goshin Jutsu
2013 fun demonstration of Kodokan Goshin Jutsu by Judo students at Tokai University.
Interesting in many ways, but especially in how it breaks the excessive formality of kata performance that has became the rule (and which, arguably, was not always the case). A light-hearted performance of the most recent Judo kata, an interesting example of kata as real practice and (not only) cerimony.
My name is Travis Stevens and I have been grappling for most of my life in one way or another. The purpose of this channel is to teach everyone the concepts that helped me go from an average teenage kid to the Olympic Podium in Judo! I have grappled at the highest levels being a 3x United States Judo Olympian for the 81kg weight class. I'm also a BJJ black belt under Renzo Gracie and John Danaher! I pride myself on honesty and being straightforward. I have a very direct way of teaching. You won't find any really flashy moves on my channel that look good but don’t work when your training. I only show and display techniques that I have either been caught in or have caught people in consistently. Tricks are nice to have but let's build a strong foundation of grappling so we can compete with anyone in the world.
Techniques, video breakdowns of competition footage, commentary on competition results, there's something for everyone in the channel of USA Olympic judoka Travis Stevens. Lots of content spanning more than a decade, interesting and useful for all levels.
Our YouTube channel's goal is to provide fundamentally sound and technically innovative skills that will benefit everyone in the martial arts. We focus on bringing you videos on Kodokan Judo, Sambo and Shingitai Jujitsu that everyone in the grappling and combat sports as well as the martial arts may find useful. The Welcome Mat Judo, Jujitsu and Sambo Club was formed in 1969 in Kansas City, Missouri. Our athletes and coaches have travelled the world competing, training and coaching and bring this experience to our channel. Steve Scott is the club's founder and Head Technical Director. Our videos feature the coaches and athletes at Welcome Mat in addition to other coaches and athletes who support our work.
Loads of technique videos, including material not common elsewhere - armlocks, no gi, etc. On top of the technique videos, there is also content about the history of Judo and interviews with US Judo pioneers.
Yawara, a Fashionable Judo Girl
Yawara! (also stylized as YAWARA!) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa. It was serialized in Big Comic Spirits from 1986 to 1993, with its chapters collected into 29 tankōbon volumes by publisher Shōgakukan. The story centers around Yawara Inokuma, a seemingly ordinary high school girl, but her grandfather, a living judo legend, has been secretly training her since she was a child so that she can win the gold medal at the Olympic Games. But Yawara has only one desire, to have a normal life (...) That same year, Kitty Films and Madhouse began an anime adaptation titled Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl!. It was broadcast on Yomiuri TV from October 1989 through September 1992, for 124 episodes. Each episode ended with a countdown of days remaining to the start of the Barcelona Olympics
A popular anime domestically (it competed/paired with with Ranma 1/2 in the late 80s), but lesser known internationally. A Judo-themed anime with comedy and romantic elements, and with the Barcelona Olympics in the background.
News from Japan, with live broadcasting of competitions (partially or in full) in the YouTube channel, and general updates in the webpage. Important resource for to wishing to follow Japanese judo.
